Answer to Balloon Conundrum:
Sharisse and Mytresa have been experimenting with balloons.
They found that if they fill five balloons with helium, they can use the balloons to lift fifty pounds. Three of the same balloons filled with hydrogen lift sixty pounds. Ten filled with neon lift twenty pounds.
How many pounds could the ladies lift with two hydrogen, three helium, and seven neon balloons?
84 lbs.
Using the ratios from the informational paragraph:
5 He balloons = 50 lbs lifted, so that is 10 lbs per 1 He balloon
3 H balloons = 60 lbs lifted, so that is 20 lbs per 1 H balloon
10 Ne balloons = 20 lbs lifted, so that is 2 lbs per 1 Ne balloon
(2H)(20 lbs) + (3 He)(10 lbs) + (7Ne)(2 lbs) = 40 + 30 + 14 = 84 lbs.
